Chick Politician In San Antonio Gets Caught Ripping On Gays, Says It’s Her First Amendment Right To Express Her Viewpoint

(Source) This is certainly one way (a bad way) you can choose to respond to a secret recording of your homophobic diatribe being leaked. After a tape of her anit-gay sentiments was published, San Antonio city councilwoman Elisa Chan tells KENS 5 that she’s perfectly in her rights to say these generally awful things. To wit:

The comments from the staff meeting on May 21st were and are my personal opinions and thoughts as guaranteed to me by the 1st amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It is unfortunate that a former member of my D9 Council team betrayed the trust of my staff members and me. I will fight, I will always fight for our freedom of speech, especially in a private setting.”

Last week, an aide (who has wisely since quit) of Chan’s shared a tape with the San Antonio Express-News of Chan and members of her staff speaking very frankly about their feelings toward non-normative sexual expression. They were not encouraging! And definitely bigoted—she called gay people “so disgusting” and that they shouldn’t be allowed to adopt children because it could irreparably confuse the kids. We think she’s the one who is confused.

I don’t think homosexual people should do adoption. They should be banned by adoption. You’re going to confuse those kids. They should be banned… You shouldn’t affect the young people. How terrible. … They’re going to be confused. You see two men go into a bedroom. You see two women kissing. Is that not confusing? It’s confusing.

This story is a double edged sword, depending on your viewpoint of course. I’m an equal rights guy. Got no problem with gays being gays and getting married and raising children. It works on Modern Family so it’s gotta work in real life, right? So when you look at it that way (which is about 75% of the country’s POV) you come to the conclusion that Elisa Chan is a super conservative who just hates gays. That her comments were out of touch and a backward way of thinking. Why should a married gay couple not be able to adopt a child and give it a big gay loving home? It’s better than growing up in a crackhouse from The Wire with no daddy and a deadbeat mom. So from this angle, Elisa Chan is a dumbass for her comments.

But then there’s another way to look at it. The way of the Constitution. However out of touch and insensitive her comments were, she’s got every right to say them. It’s gonna turn people off and be a big news story, but if she’s sticking to her guns and not budging, who am I or anyone else with a different opinion to tell her she’s wrong? I’m on the record for supporting people who tell it how it is to the media and don’t wuss out when the shitstorm comes back at them. That’s why even though I don’t agree with her, I still respect the hell out of Elisa Chan. “I will always fight for our freedom of speech, especially in a private setting.” If that’s not her campaign slogan next election she’s doing it wrong. The whole justice system is based on the Constitution, so she pulled a powerful card right there.

But I better not hear a peep from Elisa Chan when pro-gay San Antonians start passing out these bumper stickers outside city hall. First Amendment bitches.
